Staying true to the principle of “feeding the soil to feed the plant,” organic spice cultivation is no longer a niche initiative but a growing movement aligned with the FAO’s definition of organic farming as “an integrated system of farming based on ecological principles.”
This shift marks a crucial turning point—especially in India, where small-scale spice farmers are increasingly empowered to adopt sustainable production methods that promote biodiversity, enhance biological cycles, and support soil health. The organic spice journey is no longer just about going back to our roots; it’s about creating a future where health, environment, and livelihoods grow together.
The Post-Pandemic Surge in Conscious Consumption
In the wake of COVID-19, consumer awareness around health and immunity reached unprecedented levels, leading to a significant spike in demand for organic spices like turmeric, ginger, pepper, garlic, and cumin. These staples of Indian kitchens gained prominence not just for their culinary use, but for their well-documented health benefits in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and natural wellness sectors.
Take turmeric, for example—rich in curcumin and globally recognised for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Ginger and garlic too are valued for their immune-boosting, antimicrobial and digestive health benefits. Even humble black pepper is now celebrated for enhancing the bioavailability of nutrients like curcumin. It’s no surprise that
these spices are now being embraced as functional ingredients in dietary supplements, herbal formulations, and wellness products across the world.
Trust, Transparency, and Traceability
Today’s consumer wants more than just flavour—they want food with a conscience. Organic spices have grown in popularity not only due to their perceived purity, but also because they represent a broader commitment to environmental stewardship, chemical-free farming, and social equity.
This trust is built on transparency, traceability, and third-party certifications that guarantee authenticity. Recognising this trend, both public and private sectors are investing in organic farming infrastructure—improving access to certification, post-harvest handling, and export-readiness support for farmers. The result is a more structured, resilient organic ecosystem.
Unlocking Export Potential
Although organic spices currently represent less than 1% of India’s total spice export value, their growth trajectory is promising. In 2023–24, India exported approximately 3,070 metric tonnes of organic spices and spice products, valued at `135.35 crore (USD 16.35 million). The key contributors—turmeric, ginger, pepper, cumin, chilli, and cardamom— collectively account for over 90% of this value.
As high-value, low-volume commodities, organic spices hold immense potential for premium global markets. India’s varied agroclimatic zones—from the lush hills of the Northeast to the sun-drenched
Deccan plateau—offer ideal growing conditions for a wide range of spice crops. In many regions, traditional farming practices have remained largely organic by default, making the shift to certified organic methods smoother and more scalable.
A Policy Push for a Greener Tomorrow
A significant milestone in this journey is the 8th edition of the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), notified in January 2025. Recognised by the European Commission and Switzerland for unprocessed plant products, the NPOP now provides a more robust framework for production, accreditation, and export alignment. Through this programme and aligned government initiatives, growers are being supported in transitioning to certified organic systems—thus enhancing the availability of high-quality, globally accepted organic spices.

As a key institution under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry,
Spices Board India plays a pivotal role in this transformation. Through focused programmes aimed at exporters and growers, the Board is working to expand India’s footprint in the global spice market—especially in the organic segment. From infrastructure development and certification facilitation to promoting food safety and sustainable practices, the Board’s initiatives help unlock the potential of India’s biodiversity, climatic advantage, and time-honoured agricultural wisdom.
India’s organic spice story is not just about better farming—it’s about creating a fairer, healthier food system.
